Sewage and Waste Management

Jan. 30, 2024

Sewage Management:

Bettahalasuru's sewage management issues stem from inadequate infrastructure and increasing population density. The lack of proper sewage treatment facilities has led to untreated waste being discharged into local water bodies, contributing to severe environmental degradation. The local government is currently working to address these issues through several initiatives.

Objectives:
  • Establish a reliable sewage treatment facility.
  • Reduce the discharge of untreated sewage into the environment.
  • Increase community awareness regarding proper sewage disposal.
  • Implementation: The local government is collaborating with NGOs to develop a sewage treatment plant (STP) aimed at processing the sewage generated from the panchayat. Awareness campaigns are being launched to educate residents on the importance of proper sewage disposal and the functioning of the new STP.

Harmful Effects: Contaminated water sources pose serious health risks, including waterborne diseases such as cholera and dysentery. Additionally, untreated sewage contaminates local water bodies, affecting aquatic life and degrading ecosystems.

Conclusion: Improving sewage management in Bettahalasuru is crucial for safeguarding public health and the environment. Community involvement and investment in infrastructure are key to overcoming current challenges.

    Waste Management

The waste management scenario in Bettahalasuru is characterized by a significant amount of waste generated from households and commercial establishments. With an estimated 53 metric tons of garbage produced monthly, the village has struggled with effective waste segregation and disposal.

    Objectives:
  • Achieve a minimum of 90% waste segregation at the source.
  • Establish efficient waste collection and disposal systems.
  • Promote recycling and composting practices among residents.
  • Implementation: The EcoGram Initiative, launched by Embassy Group in collaboration with TAICT, focuses on decentralised waste management, where residents sort waste into dry, wet, and sanitary categories at the source. Workshops and training sessions are organized to teach residents effective waste segregation and management techniques, significantly raising awareness.

Harmful Effects: Improper waste disposal contributes to air, water, and soil pollution. Burning waste releases harmful toxins into the atmosphere. Additionally, accumulation of waste can lead to breeding grounds for disease-carrying pests, exacerbating public health risks.

Conclusion: The EcoGram initiative has shown promising results in Bettahalasuru, achieving a segregation rate of 92% at the source. Continuous efforts in community engagement and infrastructural support are essential to maintain and enhance these achievements in waste management.
