Water Resources and Rainfall

Mar. 26, 2024

Introduction

Based on the rainfall data from 2004 to 2024, Bettahalasuru village has seen significant impacts on agriculture and water resources.

In low rainfall years like 2014 and 2023, water scarcity affected crops, such as ragi and groundnuts, leading farmers to shift to drought-resistant crops. High rainfall years like 2018, however, boosted yields but also caused flooding in fields and quarries.

Quarrying has also contributed to groundwater depletion, and heavy rainfall occasionally led to quarries flooding, impacting both extraction and groundwater recharge. Rainwater harvesting remains essential to manage these fluctuations.

Water Sources: Bettahalasuru relies on a mix of surface and groundwater sources. Key water sources include:
  • Open Wells: These are traditional sources providing water for domestic use, especially during dry spells.
  • Quarries: While they are significant for water extraction, their overuse has led to depletion and flooding issues during heavy rains.
  • Rainwater Harvesting Systems: Initiatives are underway to capture and store rainwater, which is crucial for replenishing groundwater levels and providing a backup during dry periods.
